All hail the Minionomenon!

The world of fashion has succumbed to yellow fever-and we absolutely love it! No, I have not gone entirely bonkers. But a host of fashion designers seem to have caught the fever for sure. They’ve fallen head-over-heels in love with certain amoeba-like yellow creatures from a movie franchisee. And can you blame them? Given that the fashion industry has a long standing history of taking inspiration from films, this turn of events didn’t come as a surprise at all. For those who still haven’t got the drift, I’m referring to the adorable, goggle-clad Minions, from the movie ‘Despicable Me’. Yes, they have blabbered their way into fashion, and have taken over the world of coveted couture-clothing, footwear, jewellery, bags-you name it. Here’s a lowdown on the trend.

The world was first introduced to the mischievous little creatures when the movie Despicable Me released in 2010. Five years later, we are all set to enjoy the madness again with the prequel to the film, Minions, which released this month. And as a movie promotional strategy, Illumination Entertainment, the film’s producers, and Universal Partnerships & Licensing teamed up with a host of fashion designers from the UK to launch a capsule clothing collection called “Minion Bellow Yellow” collection. In minion language, “bello” means “hello”. The collection features whimsical, limited edition designs from some of the top labels such Rupert Sanderson, Giles Deacon, Piers Atkinson, Tatty Devine and Criminal Damage along with SJYP, a new denim label based in South Korea. It was launched exclusively at Selfridges in London and Manchester on June 11, following the film’s London premiere, and is now available globally.

3. Hats and headbands

The fine black netting overlay on the headbands will give you a retro feel. The “Stuart, Kevin and Bob” headband featuring three perfectly placed minions on top will make people think you’re up to some major mischief too!

Plain painted nails are a passé these days. The latest trend is to let your creativity come out in the form of nail art. Be it bold or simple, nail art has become the hottest accessory among ladies that they love to flaunt. And since the minion madness has taken over every aspect of fashion, how could this be left behind? Fans are thrilled to have the little yellow cylindrical creatures painted on their nails. It’s easy to do and you can experiment with the colours and patterns.

They are available for almost all the latest phones-Samsung galaxy, Nexus, Sony Xperia, iPhone, etc. Choose from a range of silicone, rubber, aluminium or plastic cases. While the silicone and rubber ones come in the actual shape of a minion, the hard aluminium or plastic ones have a print of the creatures on them.

Such is the craze that Pantone Colour Institute, one of the biggest colour organisations in the world, decided to announce a colour after it- Minion Yellow. It is also the first time they’ve brought out a colour based on a movie character. According to them, it is an illuminating, energetic, and fun-loving shade of yellow shade that suggests intellectual curiosity and enlightenment. It is the colour of hope, joy and optimism.

After reading this article, any doubts that you might have had about the pop culture that is now a big chunk of the fashion world, can be put to rest. And the best part about this trend is that it appeals to children and adults alike-sometimes adults more than children actually! So go ahead, flaunt your favourite cartoon character and don’t let your inhibitions stop you from painting the town yellow!

Poopaye and have a nice day! 🙂
