Home Remedies For Weak, Brittle Nails

Like every other part of our body our nails too demand equal attention. Their care and nourishment is as essential for our health as our hands and legs’. While some people are extra careful about taking care of their nails, some couldn’t care less. The reasons for weak nails could be age, too much or too less exposure to moisture, nutritional deficiencies or certain skin diseases. And why always spend those extra bucks and waste all that energy to go to a salon or spa when you can get rid of these problems and get your pretty nails back at home itself. Check out these simple DIY home remedies to nourish your nails.

1. Avoid too much exposure to water:

Washing your hands more often than needed can weaken your nails. This is because nails absorb water but the water soon diffuses out and the changing water content can cause strain over time and make your nails brittle. So the simplest preventive measure is to wash your hands ONLY when required and when you do, do not keep them under water for too long.

Now this one’s going to be hard on girls but if you really want healthy, strong nails then you have to avoid coating your nails with these and within a few months your nails will be as good as new!

 

3. Coconut oil:

Not just for hair, coconut oil also works as a great healer for weak and brittle nails. The saturated fat in coconut oil acts as a good moisturizer. It also prevents various nail infections. You just need to warm some coconut oil and apply it on each nail followed by massaging each thoroughly for 5 minutes.

Another option is to mix some lemon juice with coconut oil in a small bowl/cup and soak your nails in the solution for about 10 minutes before going to bed. Wear gloves overnight for best results.

 

4. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Its nutrient-high content which includes vitamins, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron is very healthy for nails. In addition to these, it contains malic acid and acetic acid which helps fight nail infections. All you have to do is mix some apple cider vinegar and water in a small bowl, soak your nails in the solution for a few minutes immediately followed by gently pushing down the cuticles. Doing this once daily can show positive results in just a few days.

 

5. Tea Tree Oil:

This option is good especially when the nails become brittle due to fungal infections as it’s a good antiseptic. Moreover, it helps treat discoloured nails.

Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with one half teaspoon of vitamin E oil, rub the solution over your nails and massage gently for a few minutes. Leave it on for half an hour, rinse it off with lukewarm water, pat dry and apply a moisturizing lotion. Do this twice a day for a month and see the change!

 

 

6. Vitamin E oil Night Treatment:

Apart from using it with tea tree oil one can also just use plain vitamin E oil for quick nourishment of nails. All you have to do is break open a vitamin E capsule to extract the oil, apply it over your nails before going to bed and gently massage your nails for 5-10 minutes. You can also take vitamin E pills orally.

 

7. Sea Salt Treatment:

Mix together two teaspoons of fine sea salt with two drops each of lemon juice or oil, frankincense oil, myrrh oil and wheat germ oil. Take warm water in a bowl, pour this mixture into it and then soak your hands in it for about 15 minutes. Repeat this twice a week to obtain shiny healthy nails.

8. Beer:

And I’m sure this one must have caught the eye of many of you! Well, if not anything else then this remedy may sure be a good way to put your beer leftovers to some good use. First of all, heat a quarter cup of olive oil till its warm enough to touch. Then mix it with a quarter cup each of apple cider vinegar and beer. Soak your nails in this solution for good 10-15 minutes. Follow this remedy twice a week and your nails will be good to go!

 

9. Vaseline:

Since dehydration is often one of the primary causes of brittle nails, application of Vaseline at night can help keep them hydrated and prevent them from splitting.

10. Lemon Juice:

Apart from strengthening your nails, lemon juice also keeps them shining bright and white! The best way to use this remedy is by first mixing one table spoon of fresh lemon juice and three table spoons of olive oil in a small bowl. Heat the small bowl in a microwave till its warm enough to touch. Apply it to your nails before going to bed, wear gloves and leave it overnight.

11. Eat Right! :

Eating the right foodstuffs will help keep your body clean and healthy from the inside too. For example, eating food rich in the Vitamin B Biotin can help strengthen your nails and is found in cauliflower, peanuts and lentils. Saturated fats which are found in avocado and coconut oil are also essential to keep your nails strong.

12. File them:

Last but not the least, its a good practice to file your nails often and keep the edges sharp. It keeps them strong.
