Galliano is a creative genius and his return to the world of Couture with Margiela was nothing short of that. Maison Margiela’s story always revolves around transformation which partners perfectly well with what Galliano is all about. And his Fall 2015 Couture collection is testament to the fact that Margiela is the perfect coupling for him. A match that could have only been made in the heavenly world of fashion!
The designer not only defied conventions in many ways but he did them in such fine creativity and made everyone swoon with his collection. Starting from the big climactic moment of the show because who wants to wait? Galliano’s bride was an extravagant vision in white but of course it doesn’t end there; his bride wore an origami-like gown with plastic trimmings and bag of trompe l’oeil tulle net in place of a veil!
But of course that wasn’t all, he stormed the runway with fabrics that are normally never fit for the haute couture showings. He made use of burlaps, neoprene, boiled wool and yes, plastic. The garments, though not the most wearable, were ridiculously good. He blew everyone away with the story each garment told, going from ugly to beautiful and developing from moth to a cocoon in all its glory.
The silhouettes were extravagant from floor sweeping gowns extending into something of a wing-like structure to swaths of emerald green cascading around the model’s body to form a jewel-like cocoon. And let’s not forget this rich blue bustier over a deconstructed burlap dress. Has a potato sack ever looked this good?
The accessories were loud and theatrical, to go with the rest of the look, of course. From sky high pumps that could also be used as pizza cutters to voluminous fabric necklaces, there was nothing too short on drama here!
So, how could beauty and hair looks stay behind? Exaggerated cat-eye shapes in striking cobalt blue gave a very artisanal look to the models. The garments went beyond the fabrics in the form of cut outs painted on the body. There was so much happening and yet it all made sense, that kind of mad chaos which manages to thrive is the true sign of creative brilliance. And we saw it plenty at this show!
Galliano went as far as to include male models which was a great move in this era of gender neutrality. So, we can see it doesn’t end with beautiful clothes, even in fashion! With all the fun this collection brought to couture, we can only hope that it only gets fresher from here on, our fingers are crossed!
