Milan Men’s Fashion Week rounded up its 4-day extravaganza just last week. There are so many trends for Spring/Summer 2016 worth noting and calling them gender-bending would be a huge understatement!
This season served up eccentric youthful looks and a major 70s retro-romantic throwback, even a hint of 60s was hard to miss.
Here are some of the key trends which I think are going to be absolutely everywhere by next summer!
Plaids
With all the designers getting all nostalgic over the 70s, we saw full plaid suits at Missoni and Zegna completely re-invented the trend in plush colors and I can’t stop swooning all over their collection.
Short Shorts
The boys are stealing are hot pants and I think they have a much more comfortable version of it (don’t they always?). This trend started in London and there were plenty of it in Milan, time to strut those legs, our fellow gentlemen!
Androgynous Looks
Gender neutral have been growing in Menswear for quite some time now, and this has gotten so big that there isn’t anything boys can’t wear anymore. From pussy bow shirts, ruffles, man skirts to pretty prints and genderless silhouettes, we saw a bit of everything this week.
Fluid Layers
The fabrics were light and very breezy. The silhouettes were fluid without being slouchy. We saw beautifully stitched cropped trousers, linen bombers and unstructured knit outerwear. I think womenswear needs to take a cue from these super cool looks.
Retro Palette
There is a very clear 70s revival going on everywhere lately and Gucci went all the out with it. It was like the ‘Summer of 69’ all over again. The colours, the prints, the silhouettes all take you back to Woodstock where it all began!
The collections at Milan are always all about fine tailoring and refined craftsmanship. But this time around the creatives pushed all boundaries to bring interest back to the Italian runway. And we can’t wait to see what the rest of the world is going to experiment with in menswear in the coming season, it is indeed a very interesting time in fashion for the lads!
